Five Inspirational Films

October 4, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

A very interesting documentary produced in Denmark, called Nature Play, emphasizes the importance of outdoor education. This captivating film combines interviews with videos of children exploring the outside

A second inspirational documentary is called Navajo Math Circles. A collaborative effort by local teachers, college professors, and Navajo families, this educational program is an innovative approach to combining Navajo culture with a creative approach to math instruction.

Another creative and collaborative approach to education is titled, Readers of the Holocaust. An artist, a college professor, a high school teacher, and high school seniors all team together to study social justice through graphic novels.

Two additional short films that are worth noting focus on the student-teacher relationship. The first one, Teachers, is directed by Mark Columbus and viewable at PBS.org. It takes place in Los Angeles and explores the relationship between a caring teacher and a struggling student.

For my fifth teacher flick of special merit, I chose the heartwarming film, Jose and Mr. Ramos. The opening scene is of a third grade student, Jose, walking to school in front of a beautiful strawberry field with a mountain backdrop. Jose’s parents are farm workers in Salinas, California. His teacher, Mr. Ramos, likes to tell the kids that he was born in Mexico and got up at 4 am to pick vegetables. Sometimes he worked for 10 an 12 hours in the hot summer sun. By sharing his story, the kids open up to him.

Born To Run Bruce Springsteen

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began.

Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Tips On Picking Up Choreography Quickly

Lesley:
Your answer is Moto Memory or Muscle Memory.  Your memory in choreographed dance depends on your neuromuscular systems to do their work.  Muscle Memory is also dependent on repetition and imagery connections.  A huge thing that helped me when I was a younger dancer in Drill-Team was a technique we named “calling it”.  Try to label each part of the choreography that you are struggling with.  Name the sections something that can provide you with an image in your head so there is a cognitive connection to the actual movement.  As you are dancing you “call it” in your head to help you remember the phrases that come next.

Sherise:

Here are some tips I have given students:
If possible stand towards the front of the class. This way you can see your teacher and not have any distraction in front of you. Sometimes the teacher will show a combination or step first. Watch them do it – don’t try to do the movement along with them. Just watch and take it in. When doing the choreography in groups, mark it when it’s not your turn. If it’s not physically possible to do this, you can do it mentally.

10 Tips to Being a Happier Actor

September 30, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

1. Equalize Auditions:

Equal all auditions with the same goal and manner of importance. Stressing more importance of one audition over another places unnecessary stress, worry, and anxiety on the actor.

2. Plan for After an Audition:

Stage and screen star James Rebhorn spoke of his auditions as a, “part of my ordinary day.” He’d plan errands for afterwards so that the audition didn’t dominate the day or his focus. His life dominated the day. His auditions became more relaxed. He was comfortable. Onward he’d go to his next duty for the day.

3. Don’t Advertise Auditions:

When actors announce on social media that they, “have a huge audition” later that day, or need “Your prayers and support for a big call-back” the actor is placing undue pressure on themselves.

4. An Hour a Day Towards Future Pay:

Maintain a set schedule of one hour per day, five days a week to market your skills as an actor. Give yourself definitive tasks to complete

5. Get Out:

Depression loves loneliness, and abhors company. Depression or sadness breeds and thrives on your keeping to yourself.

6. Avoid Social Media:

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms are digital Petri dishes that foster and grow your comparison worries.

7. Learn, Grow, Network:

Take a classthat truly educates, and expands your skill set as both an actor, and as a business actor. An actor is not only the product but the promoter of the product.

8. Exercise:

Movement forces blood flow which stimulates brain activity. Increased continuous movement also diminishes toxins in the body that cause us to be sluggish and depressed.

9. Give Back:

Volunteer an hour a week at a charity, and/or volunteer time and efforts at a theater company or an arts related organization

10. Intern:

I often chide that I was once the oldest casting intern at age 29.  My casting, directing, and teaching career owes much to the foundation of my being that ancient intern.

September 30, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Tamara Rojo

Tamara Rojo is to star in a virtual reality video inspired by Akram Khan’s Giselle, which promises to allow audiences to “experience ballet in an entirely different way”.

The content, called Giselle VR, has been hailed as the beginning of a new way of engaging with audiences and bringing dance to more people.

English National Ballet, of which Rojo is artistic director, has partnered with Sky to create the two-minute piece, a 360-degree video that will become one of the first pieces of content on Sky’s new VR app, launching next month.

In the video, which features original choreography by Khan, users will be able to see Rojo moving around the space, “leaving behind a 3D trail of light and dust which will show the course of her movements”.
