Train: I think training is so valuable for all actors, whether that be in your home country or coming to a good school in the USA

Network: I have found, particularly here in the USA, networking and making a good impression is key.

Read: I think reading is so important for actors for understanding good material and characters, so read as much as you can.

Apply Everyday: We have some great platforms in NYC, you don’t even have to have an agent to get jobs now.

Watch: Watch plays and films as much as you can! Watching live theatre and great films is such a brilliant way to learn.

Adam Davenport on Nudity On-Stage

In fact, I find nudity to be rather empowering. It is one of the more vulnerable things you can do as an actor as there are quite literally no layers between you and the audience. It has made me an infinitely more confident performer: any fear that you might have about live performance is eradicated out of necessity. You are in complete control of the audience and it can be a transformative experience: whatever stage presence you inherently bring as an artist is amplified as their gaze is transfixed on you. Properly used, nudity is a powerful theatrical tool that can evoke pathos, sensuality, desire, shock or just about any emotion. And there are different types of bodies in this cast, which has made the juxtaposition of our nude forms even more poignant and self-affirming. We are all gay men and uniquely beautiful in our own imperfect way: we are not a homogeneous lot.

“There are no rules. You can be 5 or 85, and whatever you’re doing could come to fruition. You could be 30 and you haven’t done your first TV show, and there are no rules. There are only things in your head. The only rule is, don’t stop and don’t quit.”

Theo Rossi on the Business of Acting

Sons was like going to college for me, in a way. I felt like I had been in high school, even though I had been acting for eight or nine years, before that. I had done a couple episodes of something, here and there, a small movie, and a bunch of commercials. I started as an extra. Sons was like going to college because, when you look at Sons, I started as a background co-star guy, and then Season 4 changed everything. That’s when they really spotlighted him, and then obviously the rest is history. But my mentality will always be in hustle mode. My mentality will always be that I’m gonna go back to doing something else. I think that’s what keeps me so hungry and aggressive and sharp. I never rest on my laurels. I’m constantly trying to be better. I’m constantly trying to surround myself with great people, even with our production company. I definitely have and will always have that belief that I’ll never work again. I don’t think there’s an actor out there that wouldn’t tell you that, and if they don’t, they’re lying. The truth is that some of the greatest don’t work, and some of the worst are making tons of money. It has nothing to do with you, but has everything to do with what’s going on, at the moment. I’ve done some shows that I thought were going to be the greatest show in the world, and they didn’t get picked up, or nobody saw it. I’ve been very fortunate to go from something like Sons to Luke Cage, which are two of the biggest shows. At least, in my life, they are, just being out and about in the public, which is pretty incredible. I’ve very, very, very fortunate, not just to be in them, but to have characters that have become talking points for the shows. People just love something about them and the way they are. Maybe I’ll do something where I’m not as violent and crazy next. I’m open for This is Us. If This is Us is looking, I’m ready to go.”

How Lance Reddick’s Background as a Musician Informs His Acting

August 9, 2018 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Lance Reddick

“It’s funny and interesting because they’ve found that with actors who are athletes and actors who are visual artists, music helps. For example, I’m a big rhythm and paintings person, so being a musician really helped me, particularly with Shakespeare, which subsequently helped me with acting because I’ve played so many characters who give a lot of monologues[laughs]. So I’m good at that because I was really good at Shakespeare, and I was good at Shakespeare because of my music. I was able to apply my musical trends to my Shakespearean study.

But the rhythm and the key to the character is very important as well, and you’ll find that especially when you’re doing characters who have different accents. Most of the characters that I’ve played don’t talk like me in real life, and I’ve played a few characters who speak similar to each other: you know the commanding officer, cop type. And in terms of being able to break down how I approach learning lines, I was able to apply my experiences from playing the piano, so that was also very helpful.”
