Feedback after 2 semesters lessons with Giuseppe Ravì at Max Reinhardt Seminar – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Today is the 1st of February, a day which means a lot at University of Music and Perfomring Arts Vienna. Today students and docents can finally have a break after an intense winter semester. We all, as docents, try to do our best, not only during our lessons, but supporting them as much as possible in any situation. There are so many great things happening all the time at MDW. It’s unbelievable. I have seen so much enthusiasm and passion from my Colleagues at Max Reinhardt Seminar and Institut für Gesang und Musiktheater. I am grateful for working in such a great context. I personally have a question in my head after a “journey” with my students. I know what I teach them and I know what they achieved. But what do they feel that they have learned from the work that we have done together? The best way to have an answer to this question is.. asking them. So, after having worked with my students – actors for 2 semesters… I asked them.

Train: I think training is so valuable for all actors, whether that be in your home country or coming to a good school in the USA

Network: I have found, particularly here in the USA, networking and making a good impression is key.

Read: I think reading is so important for actors for understanding good material and characters, so read as much as you can.

Apply Everyday: We have some great platforms in NYC, you don’t even have to have an agent to get jobs now.

Watch: Watch plays and films as much as you can! Watching live theatre and great films is such a brilliant way to learn.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A few times a younger musician has come up to me to tell me that they had been somewhat in the doldrums creatively, but that their experience of a piece of mine had opened a door for them onto new possibilities, and motivated them to keep it up. Success, I think, means making room in that way: creating art that is generative, that begets more art.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

If you sense that the people to whom you habitually present your art don’t get it or don’t value it, then don’t change your art: change your audience.

Adam Davenport on Nudity On-Stage

In fact, I find nudity to be rather empowering. It is one of the more vulnerable things you can do as an actor as there are quite literally no layers between you and the audience. It has made me an infinitely more confident performer: any fear that you might have about live performance is eradicated out of necessity. You are in complete control of the audience and it can be a transformative experience: whatever stage presence you inherently bring as an artist is amplified as their gaze is transfixed on you. Properly used, nudity is a powerful theatrical tool that can evoke pathos, sensuality, desire, shock or just about any emotion. And there are different types of bodies in this cast, which has made the juxtaposition of our nude forms even more poignant and self-affirming. We are all gay men and uniquely beautiful in our own imperfect way: we are not a homogeneous lot.
