Break The Status Quo When Teaching Dance
Wise Moves: deviating from the standard– the usual, the status quo– to ensure impact
Wise Move #1: Know your strengths and stick to them
I don’t yet know her instructor, but I admire her efforts to honestly communicate where her strengths (or interests) are and knowing where to send students searching for something else.
Wise Move #2: Get specific
We can’t please everyone all of the time and we can sure make ourselves miserable in the process of trying. One example of choosing wisdom is being honest about with whom you do your best work and focusing on that.
Wise Move #3: Seize the opportunity
When I first met with this dancer, within minutes I knew I had a choice. We could spend our time on vocabulary and terminology (which had been the initial request), or I could help her understand her body. There is a lot going on there…lordosis, knock-knees, hyper-extension, rolling ankles, etc.
Wise Move #4: Keep them moving
For this dancer, with this body, I suspect there are instructors out there that would tell her she shouldn’t dance. No one has done that. I have opted to gain the knowledge needed to help such dancers. Her other instructor opted to know where to send her to gain that help.

Why I Should Have Paid More Attention in Music Theory Class
Paul Hindemith is best known as a composer, but was also a violinist, violist, conductor, and teacher who wrote a series of textbooks on musicianship, harmony, and composition. Apparently, even back in the ’40’s, he felt that many musicians lacked a sufficient understanding of the underlying principles which make music work.
In his preface to Elementary Training for Musicians he writes:
“If our performers – players, singers, and conductors alike – had a better insight into the essentials of musical scores, we would not be faced with what seems to have become almost a rule in the superficially over-polished performances of today: either the rattling through of a piece without any reasonable articulation, without any deeper penetration into its character, tempo, expression, meaning, and effect – or the hyper-individualistic distortion of the ideas expressed in a composer’s score.”

How Do Songwriters Make Money?
It depends on who they are.
If the songwriters are pop writers like Max Martin or Ryan Tedder, they carefully craft a hit single, find a boy band or celebrity diva to sing it, and rake in the millions. The music publishing company takes a cut, and the performer responsible for the recording, and the record label. But if the hit is a hit, album sales, and streaming, and radio plays, and use of the song in movies and television and ads are usually significant enough that the songwriter makes bank.
If the songwriters are indie musicians like Rennie and Brett Sparks of the Handsome Family are, things work a little bit differently: they write their own music, tour and record albums themselves to promote it. On top of that, they take what they can get in royalties on their compositions.
