Ian Shaw

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

To inspire, upset, amuse, collaborate, define, create, comfort, be playful, disciplined – and leave an audience feeling something – anything, they may not have felt before.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Listen to everything. Sharpen your scissors. Be truthful and mean it.

Can Anyone Learn To Sing? For Most Of Us, The Answer Is Yes

Sing

The act of singing looks simple but actually involves highly skilled control and coordination of muscles – and these muscles need to be both flexible and strong. True control comes from training.

A person needs to be able to control the air pressure in their lungs and use their abdominal muscles to push air through the trachea, where it meets the vocal folds, which start to vibrate. In a really good singer, vocal health, posture and alignment, breath management are matched with imagination, self-expression and creativity.

As singing voice teacher Jeannette Lovetri writes:

It takes about 10 years to be a master singer. Ten years of study, investigation, involvement, experience, experiment, exploration, and development, and in some way, that’s when you start really being an artist.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Having the freedom, courage and ability to create the music that you want, regardless of what happens to it in the ‘business’ sense. If you have been blessed with a precious musical talent and you have put in the time and effort to be the best you can be without comparison to others, that’s success. If it’s something that’s needed in the world, I believe the product will find its place, but that’s not up to the musician.
