PIANIST
Interview: George Fu, Pianist

As a musician, what is your definition of success?
External success in our line of work is ephemeral at best, because there is always more to do: another work to master, another concert to play, another corner in the score left unturned. There are so few reliable markers of validation in art, so turning outside in search of success usually leaves people feeling bitter and confused.
It’s probably better to focus on different things. Did I prepare thoroughly? Was my playing authentic? Did that program work organically? What could I have done differently (probably most important!)? True success is an attitude, not a destination.

Interview: Antimo Magnotta, Pianist

As a musician, what is your definition of success?
I think you need to succeed as a human being first. Any form of art is just one of your potential expression. Music is not separated from your entity, it is simply radiating from you. Success is being happy and loving what you do.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?
Find the right place for every tone.
Be strict with yourself.
Listen, listen, listen while you’re practicing.
Play, record and listen again.
Talk to music, paint with music.
Maintain your focus.
Learn from the best!
The score you play needs to become YOU!

Interview: Luca Buratto, Pianist

As a musician, what is your definition of success?
The success, to me, is to disappear as an interpreter
Of course this is a very extreme way to say it, but my goal is always to respect and bring back to life the composer’s will. As Flaubert said about literature, the key is when the interpreter lets the composer and his music conquer the scene. Music, as a language, should be the vehicle of a message the composer left us. I can’t stand performances which are personal and narcissist showcases!

Interview: Kit Downes, Composer, Pianist & Organist

As a musician, what is your definition of success?
It’s pretty subjective I think, but for me it is being able to play the music you like and earn enough money from it to have a happy life – to not have to make musical choices based on financial factors.
What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?
Sound like yourself and question everything/everyone – and most important is to enjoy it.
