Rokas Valuntonis

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

I think success for a musician is finding a way to evoke emotions in your listeners. If you’re able to connect with yourself and your audience, in my opinion, you’re a successful artist.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I really like the saying “don’t search for yourself in music but search for music in yourself’’. That is the only thing I would recommend.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A relatively full diary, and a good mixture of performing and teaching / coaching. Working primarily as a chamber musician, I greatly value the importance of collaborating with colleagues who both share my musical values and can challenge me with new ideas.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Take nothing for granted, keep open to new ideas and enjoy the discipline of creative musical practice.

How Music Lessons Can Improve Language Skills

July 5, 2018 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Music Lessons

A new study from MIT has found that piano lessons have a very specific effect on kindergartners’ ability to distinguish different pitches, which translates into an improvement in discriminating between spoken words. However, the piano lessons did not appear to confer any benefit for overall cognitive ability, as measured by IQ, attention span, and working memory.

“The children didn’t differ in the more broad cognitive measures, but they did show some improvements in word discrimination, particularly for consonants. The piano group showed the best improvement there,” says Robert Desimone, director of MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the senior author of the paper.

“That’s a big thing for kids in learning language: being able to hear the differences between words,” he says. “They really did benefit from that.”

Adrian Brendle

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Speaking purely as a performing musician my definition of success is to convey the ideas of the composer to the audience with my role being the one of an interpreter who takes the liberty to place emphasis on certain aspects of the work. I would say that enabling others to do this equally defines success.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think that patience and persistence are probably very important qualities for young musicians, in combination with a strong belief in what we are doing.

Matei Varga

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

I don’t think success has a definition. Radu Lupu is successful, and Liberace was successful. Ingmar Bergman was a successful film-maker, and the Fifty Shades movies are great hits. If you can make sense out of that, please email me ASAP.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Resist assimilation.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think the most important is to not stop yourself. Not to tear down but build bridges where there is a problem. There seems to be a notion that music now is only for the young, and that after a certain age we should just give up or not even try. Also that music is for certain types of people or even nationality. I would never want to see anyone be affected by these foolish stereotypes.

The second is to find one’s own identity within music, but to start this journey by gathering knowledge. To also remember that it isn’t just about playing the instrument, that one should care for the history, the lives of the composers and their circumstances, the musical language and journey. Music is so exciting in so many different ways. And, importantly, not let setbacks or a bad competition or exam put you off. Everyone goes through ups and downs – they can also be a blessing to learn from and to encourage one to raise one’s standards even higher.
