INTERVIEW

Interview: Gabriel Schwabe, Cellist

Gabriel Schwabe

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

This is incredibly difficult to answer as every individual needs something different. However these are a few thoughts I find important:

1. Technique and expression/sound are one and the same thing – they can not be separated from each other.

2. There are no shortcuts in music making. Finding ones own voice is a long and difficult process – there is no substitute for honesty in music.

3. Learn to calibrate your inner compass to guide you. Approval or rejection by others can inspire you to learn but should never determine the direction you’re moving.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Professionally, success means having the opportunity to work with musicians, ensembles, stage directors, choreographers, librettists, etc., whose work one considers to be at the highest artistic level. On a more personal level, I always find that success should mean achieving our standards as artists. I mean, to be as close as one can be to finishing a score with the feeling that its quality as a work was accomplished and is quite satisfying. Not getting closer to what I consider to be the desired quality for a musical work, then that is my definition of failure.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Well, apart from the obvious “work hard” advice, I would add self-criticism, nonconformity, the will to dare and to be curious, this last one including a true curiosity (and also respect) for other musicians’ work.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

To inspire, upset, amuse, collaborate, define, create, comfort, be playful, disciplined – and leave an audience feeling something – anything, they may not have felt before.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Listen to everything. Sharpen your scissors. Be truthful and mean it.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Regularly working on projects I truly care about, with the freedom from my collaborators to compose the music I can stand by, from both an artistic as well as narrative/filmic perspective. However, we live in a material world, so I’d probably have to add having the recording and production budgets to perfectly realise these creative visions!

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Self belief is key, I think. We live in a world where it’s very easy to compare oneself to others and this can be damaging. Everyone is on their own path, if you have the determination to learn your craft to the best of your ability, and practice it as much as possible, then shout that to the rooftops and keep the faith.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Speaking purely as a performing musician my definition of success is to convey the ideas of the composer to the audience with my role being the one of an interpreter who takes the liberty to place emphasis on certain aspects of the work. I would say that enabling others to do this equally defines success.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think that patience and persistence are probably very important qualities for young musicians, in combination with a strong belief in what we are doing.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think the most important is to not stop yourself. Not to tear down but build bridges where there is a problem. There seems to be a notion that music now is only for the young, and that after a certain age we should just give up or not even try. Also that music is for certain types of people or even nationality. I would never want to see anyone be affected by these foolish stereotypes.

The second is to find one’s own identity within music, but to start this journey by gathering knowledge. To also remember that it isn’t just about playing the instrument, that one should care for the history, the lives of the composers and their circumstances, the musical language and journey. Music is so exciting in so many different ways. And, importantly, not let setbacks or a bad competition or exam put you off. Everyone goes through ups and downs – they can also be a blessing to learn from and to encourage one to raise one’s standards even higher.
