INTERVIEW

Interview: Jonathan Cohen, Conductor & Artistic Director

Jonathan Cohen

How exactly do you see your role? Inspiring the players/singers? Conveying the vision of the composer?

You have to consider many things. Conducting is essentially a group leader role. You have to create the space for talented individuals to be able to do their finest work. Sometimes just allowing them the space for their own inspiration is the best course of action. Casting, enabling, and then solving problems when needed I’d say. Certainly my vision of the music is central but like everything, a good concert is the marriage of those ideas with the personalities that are involved in the creative process together.

What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?

The age old problem of working tremendously hard but earning a tiny amount of money as an “artist” is always a big issue. It’s absolutely no wonder to me why so many musicians suffer with severe anxiety issues because of this.

Money is persistent source of genuine worry for many musicians (including myself), but it’s always difficult to find a job in between that is flexible enough to allow space for touring or recording.

A lot of people don’t realise the huge amount of costs involved with touring, that the artists have to cover themselves. It’s not uncommon for bands to finish a tour with barely enough money left over to cover their month’s rent.

Luckily for me, I mostly play either solo or duo, so I don’t have particularly high touring costs (van hire, backline hire etc). Although, being a solo artist certainly has its downsides too. It can be a very bizarre and isolating feeling to return to an empty hotel room, having just deeply connected with a room full of 200 people shortly before. If there is a bad show or a brutal album review then it can be a heavy load to take alone.

It’s also becoming increasingly difficult to get any press for new albums. I know more and more artists who spend many months (or years) crafting an album, only for the release to totally slip under the radar. Not enough press then has a dramatic effect on agents’ abilities to book shows, which can be deeply disheartening when an artist wants to perform. I’ve certainly experienced that before.

How do you work? (as a composer)

I have 2 main composing styles. I sit at the piano and start playing and see where my hands and my emotions at that moment in time lead me. Eventually something starts happening where it feels right and that is often how I find the beginnings of a new piece. From there I’ll refine the idea, and build it up and try variations of it until I settle on “the one”. I also like to listen for music – I often hear music in my mind.. sometimes entire pieces and all the parts and all the instruments. I actually then go and try to play it by ear, from listening to it in my mind.

Who or what inspired you to take up piano, and pursue a career in music?

That’s always an interesting question, because I don’t think there was a particular event or person that inspired me directly – it was rather a collection of circumstances, I guess. I don’t come from a musical family, but my mother always loved music and played the piano as a child. One day, I came home and there was an electric piano in the living room – she just went to the music store on a whim and decided to get a piano. I was intrigued right away, so it was decided that I should have lessons. The funny thing is, after six months, I decided that I didn’t like it at all and wanted to stop. I eventually came back to it after a while, with a new teacher, and I was hooked. I had a great teacher – not necessarily a world-class pianist, but I looked up to her immensely and she really kept me going. Then, I never stopped. I never had to ask myself what I was going to study in college, or what I was going to do “when I grow up”.

What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far?

Not to let external pressures and the wrong reasons (for making music) get in the way of my love for music and playing the guitar. And it is incredibly challenging to balance private life with career.

Interview: Reiko Fujisawa, pianist

Reiko Fujisawa

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Of course we all need endurance and dedication to succeed. But sometimes, success can be measured on a more everyday level – like dealing with a less than perfect piano, or resisting the urge to run away just before the start of the concert!

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Always remember that you have to communicate the composer’s music to the audience. We have to produce colours so strong and vivid that they can see them, just like a painting.
