INTERVIEW

Interview: Lisette Oropesa, Soprano

Lisette Oropesa

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

If you feel like there’s still room to grow and you are always striving for better, and you are actually happy and enjoying the process, then you are succeeding. It’s not an arrival point. It’s a journey.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

As Americans, I think our singers always do wonderfully when their language skills outside of singing are strong. If you can carry a conversation in the language of the country you are in, you engage in different ways with your international colleagues and make some long lasting relationships. It adds another layer that I think makes a huge difference in your rapport with everyone at whatever company you are at.

What are the special challenges/pleasures of working with particular musicians, singers, ensembles and orchestras?

The piano, to me, is the instrument with the widest range of possibilities. You can express almost everything with that single instrument. But if you combine it with other instruments there are no bounds. The creation of new sounds, the interaction between the musicians and their instruments, as well as the merging of tones is simply fascinating. I love the sound of the piano, and I love the sound of strings. Combining these two instruments gives me goosebumps in every rehearsal, and every concert. This is just one reason why I love music so much. But of course there are also challenges. In my mind I’ve got a very specific idea for every composition, and how it has to sound. The greatest challenge is to make my ensemble play the music exactly as I expected it in my mind. There are details you can’t write in the score. Details the musicians have to feel, to play the piece in the right way.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Treat music as an art form that demands the utmost dedication and discipline. Career is by no means guaranteed. After you finish training and studying at the conservatoire or college, your colleagues and collaborators become, in a way, your teachers. Learn to listen through playing with others.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Many musicians in universities/conservatoire and even as professionals think someday somebody will stop by, discover their art and talent and start their career for them. That practising is the only solution. Our advice is: Never wait. Go outside, play as much as you can and start asking questions how the business is done. Because if you want to make a living from your art you have to start to think like a business man/woman – because that’s what it is, a business. And after that, you have to learn to switch between your business and your artistic personality.

Interview: Septura Brass Septet

Septura Brass Septet

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Without a doubt, patience and tenacity. It’s taken us 5 years of hard work to lay the foundations of Septura, and 20 years of practising our instruments individually before that. What’s driven us has been a love of chamber music, and an unerring belief in the unique power of brass instruments. At times the rate of progress has been frustratingly slow, or we have been temporarily demoralised by setbacks and naysayers. But we’ve plugged away, and we’re now very excited about what the future may hold for Septura.

As a composer, how do you work?

Each composition is different, but I use the Taoist concept “let your mind be empty…” then whatever fills it becomes the starting place. Once I have the initial idea, it’s a lot like the great sculptor Henry Moore’s quote: “How do I sculpt a face? I just remove anything that is not a face”. Usually for me, it’s about removing anything that doesn’t fit or lead to a direct musical experience within the composition. Because traditional notation is useless with the Refractor Piano™, I have developed many ways of documenting what I am doing. I then constantly record and make adjustments in order to see the progression of the piece.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Having the freedom, courage and ability to create the music that you want, regardless of what happens to it in the ‘business’ sense. If you have been blessed with a precious musical talent and you have put in the time and effort to be the best you can be without comparison to others, that’s success. If it’s something that’s needed in the world, I believe the product will find its place, but that’s not up to the musician.
