CELLIST

Interview: Gabriel Schwabe, Cellist

Gabriel Schwabe

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

This is incredibly difficult to answer as every individual needs something different. However these are a few thoughts I find important:

1. Technique and expression/sound are one and the same thing – they can not be separated from each other.

2. There are no shortcuts in music making. Finding ones own voice is a long and difficult process – there is no substitute for honesty in music.

3. Learn to calibrate your inner compass to guide you. Approval or rejection by others can inspire you to learn but should never determine the direction you’re moving.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?
Quite simply, playing an instrument, the cello, demands a lifetime commitment if you want to make it to the stage.  Young musicians should take that into account. I practice every day and that is rewarding in itself, but my music should be social before it is technical.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

When you play, forget about yourself. The great performances happen when the artists get out of themselves. This is also the only way to deal with the stress: just think about giving to the audience and not about what people think or how perfect you want to play. We are just a conduit of the music between the composer and the audience, nothing more.

What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far?

For me, the challenge continues to be the exploration of the “space” between the notes, and to see the other side of the notes, as if every note I play is a planet, a sphere that shows only one facet but possesses so many – to infinity.
