Interview: Lara Poe, Composer

Lara Poe

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

As a composer, success is writing a piece that I’m pleased with. The form makes sense, things fit together in a satisfying way, and the piece feels solid and cohesive, as well as being pleasant to listen to (or at least I find it pleasant to listen to). Other things that invoke a sense of satisfaction include challenging myself in some way and then fulfilling the challenge in the way I was intending to, or not quite fulfilling it but discovering something else along the way. As a pianist, success for me is mastering the technical elements of a piece, as well as maintaining a balanced equilibrium between one’s own artistic impulses and the composer’s intentions. This means allowing the piece to speak for itself while allowing for some personal artistic expression.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Creating or being a part of things you care about for as big a percentage of your time as possible.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Learn your craft and be interested in the process not just the final result. Take care over the details.

Kit Downes

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

It’s pretty subjective I think, but for me it is being able to play the music you like and earn enough money from it to have a happy life – to not have to make musical choices based on financial factors.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Sound like yourself and question everything/everyone – and most important is to enjoy it.

What are the special challenges/pleasures of working with particular musicians, singers, ensembles and orchestras?

The piano, to me, is the instrument with the widest range of possibilities. You can express almost everything with that single instrument. But if you combine it with other instruments there are no bounds. The creation of new sounds, the interaction between the musicians and their instruments, as well as the merging of tones is simply fascinating. I love the sound of the piano, and I love the sound of strings. Combining these two instruments gives me goosebumps in every rehearsal, and every concert. This is just one reason why I love music so much. But of course there are also challenges. In my mind I’ve got a very specific idea for every composition, and how it has to sound. The greatest challenge is to make my ensemble play the music exactly as I expected it in my mind. There are details you can’t write in the score. Details the musicians have to feel, to play the piece in the right way.

How do you work?

Usually I have a picture in my head or a thought that I want to define and craft into a musical piece. It’s a sort of meditation moment. It all starts with a simple improvised melody and then slowly everything else is building up around it. I tempt to work with tapes instead of digitally cause this way I pay more attention on being precise, giving the right touch, mood, to the playing. And the quality of the sound is so much better of course.

As a composer, how do you work?

Each composition is different, but I use the Taoist concept “let your mind be empty…” then whatever fills it becomes the starting place. Once I have the initial idea, it’s a lot like the great sculptor Henry Moore’s quote: “How do I sculpt a face? I just remove anything that is not a face”. Usually for me, it’s about removing anything that doesn’t fit or lead to a direct musical experience within the composition. Because traditional notation is useless with the Refractor Piano™, I have developed many ways of documenting what I am doing. I then constantly record and make adjustments in order to see the progression of the piece.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

A musician is successful when they are able to thrill millions of people with their music and that music becomes the soundtrack to everyone’s lives…

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I believe they need to have the ability to fight; they need dedication, talent and a lot of imagination
