What Makes An Audition ‘Thumbs Up’ Or ‘Thumbs Down’

April 28, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Thumbs up and down

Actress Holly Williams, who recently jumped to behind the casting table, shares some tips.

1. Look like your headshot.  When all I have to look at and remember you by is your photo, let it look like you. So much of casting is outside your control. Looking like you headshot is not one of them…

2. Make your resumes easy to read. I spent more time trying to hunt for information on your resume than I did watching your audition. Go to Paul Russell’s ACTING: MAKE IT YOUR BUSINESS book, turn to page 86 and follow the industry standard. I probably missed a marvelous part of your audition because I was searching for something that I should be able to find at a glance.

3. Keep your audition material up to date. Make it a goal to keep your audition material polished and ready to go when unexpectedly requested. This is in your control (see the pattern here?).

4. Be yourself. Have fun. Don’t speak unless spoken to. Put your professional game face on. Live in the moment once your audition begins. Politely thank them for their time and leave. If they are interested in more they will ask.

5 Steps To Developing A Mental Attitude For Success In Dance

1. Clarify your vision

When you activate your imagination and visualize your success, you’re onto one of the best-kept secrets of Olympic athletes and high-level sport coaches. Visualization is the first step to creating anything.

Take a moment to close your eyes and clarify your vision.

2. Create affirmations

To affirm something means to declare it’s true. Write your affirmations down and post them where you can see them the first thing and throughout the day.

3. Focus on your process

Keep your attention on what you are doing and nothing else. No distractions, no comparisons.

4. Positive thinking

Remember, the thoughts that flicker your mind will either be helpful or hurtful, so strive to keep your thoughts positive.

5. Let yourself shine

Instead of worrying, think instead about how you can fly, then spread your wings and go for it. Smile, have fun and be yourself.

Vocal Warm-Ups For Actors (And Singers)

April 13, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

The importance of warming-up

Vocal warm-ups are one of the key essentials to protecting yourself from injuries, such as vocal nodules (nodes) or polyps. Just like an athlete wouldn’t begin a game without stretching first, you shouldn’t sing without properly preparing your body for the stress that singing can put on your voice.

5 Steps for successfully warming up your voice from the National Theatre:

Vocal Warm-Up #1:  Start off slow:

BREATHING

Vocal Warm-Up #2: Check those resonators

RESONANCE

Vocal Warm-Up #3: Focus your sound and open your voice

OPENING UP THE VOICE

Vocal Warm-Up #4: Test your articulators

ARTICULATION

Vocal Warm-Up #5: Putting it all together

Speak some of your most troublesome lines of texts to someone else in the room, or to a mirror if you’re by yourself. What’s the use of warming up if you don’t apply it to the text you have to sing or speak?

Tips To Master Your Audition

April 8, 2016 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

1. Preparation

  • Know for whom you’re singing and why.
  • Have all of your audition repertoire in top condition.
  • Plan and practice how you’d present them to a team behind a table five feet away or to a panel in a darkened auditorium.

2. Repertoire

  • Your repertoire should be appropriate to the roles you can sing today.

3. Presentation

  • Remove older roles, non-opera gigs, irrelevant listings and any roles you don’t want to sing again from your résumé, unless there is another reason to keep them (presenting organization, conductor or director, etc.)
  • A singer should wear what makes him/her look good and feel confident and comfortable.
  • Know exactly what you’re going to say when you enter the room.
  • Have your audition binder ready. Include only those arias you want to sing today, and have your first selection first in your binder.

4. Results

  • Act as if you’ve already got the job.
  • Keep your composure whether you nailed everything or not. And then forget about it. Move on to the next audition or performance or life experience you are preparing, and don’t worry about the audition you’ve just done.
