Why Do Theatres Give Critics Free Tickets?

August 17, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Free tickets

Horowitz said: “As a board member of the Old Vic I don’t know why we give these people free tickets on the first night. Yes of course it might get four or five stars and that sort of helps us, but when they don’t and when they come in and are horrible about somebody’s work that just makes me angry.”

He added: “Everyone in the room can have an opinion about the play, but if your opinion about the play is put into a newspaper it appears to elevate it.”

Describing the theatre world as “brutal, horrible”, Horowitz told the audience “you have no idea how awful theatre is”.

“Theatre critics have the power of getting you on the first night,” he added

Interview: Reiko Fujisawa, pianist

Reiko Fujisawa

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Of course we all need endurance and dedication to succeed. But sometimes, success can be measured on a more everyday level – like dealing with a less than perfect piano, or resisting the urge to run away just before the start of the concert!

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Always remember that you have to communicate the composer’s music to the audience. We have to produce colours so strong and vivid that they can see them, just like a painting.

Which Stories Could Make Opera More Mainstream?

August 15, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Opera stories

There are no real answers, of course, and all of the following ideas are unlikely. But they’re interesting to think about if you’re intrigued by the idea of a more widely popular brand of opera.

“Game Of Thrones”

It certainly seems that “Game Of Thrones” can do no wrong. There’s no word at this stage of “Game Of Thrones” actually being turned into an opera, but we have heard an interesting cover of the opening theme music in opera form, and it’s actually terrific. This could be a big and wonderful idea.

“Jekyll & Hyde”

This is another sort of old world tale that, in terms of costuming and general atmosphere, can have a presentation not unlike “The Phantom Of The Opera.” It’s already a successful musical and already seems to be making something of a pop culture comeback.

“The BFG”

We’ll close things out with a particularly fun one. This was actually suggested at Schmopera in an article on five books that should become operas, and while it would definitely be unconventional it could also be the best way to get children interested in the performance style
