[News] Marin Alsop Becomes Vienna’s First Woman Chief Conductor

January 30, 2018 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Marin Alsop

Marin Alsop is an American conductor and violinist. She is the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and music director of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra. She is also set to become the chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra starting in 2019.

The ORF is Vienna’s third-ranked orchestra, behind the Philharmonic and the Symphony orchestras, and has little international profile. But the playing has improved over the past eight years under the German conductor Cornelius Meister and the hiring of Alsop signifies a corporate ambition to play a larger role.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Keep loving what you do, and remember that very few people are doing what we do. Be curious about everything, because what love and life you experience will become part of your music making.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

This is for aspiring creators: I’m going to repeat what I said inspires me: Be brave or what is the point? Cultivate trust in yourself. Seek feedback, response, critique, yes yes yes! But learn who you want to get feedback from rather than soliciting feedback from everyone who comes across your work.

Daveed Diggs on the Advice He Would Give His Younger Self

January 25, 2018 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Daveed Diggs

“The advice I would give my younger self is to stop stressing so much about the timeline. Whatever this thing is that’s happened to me in the last few years—if that happened any time before that, I don’t think I would’ve been ready for it. It’s been very challenging in a lot of ways.

I think I’m getting to be selective about the things I’m working on because I’m pretty confident in who I am. I don’t get nervous about people telling me I should do things because I’m not afraid to be broke. The money is not the thing; it’s about having the life and getting to do what you love for a living. I think success is a thing you need to define carefully for yourself.

I felt relatively successful pre-Hamilton in that at least I was still making art all the time. I was on tour with my band, I was working on projects, writing scripts and teaching. I had very little money, but I felt pretty successful.”
