Interview: Jessica Dannheisser, Composer

Jessica Dannheisser

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Regularly working on projects I truly care about, with the freedom from my collaborators to compose the music I can stand by, from both an artistic as well as narrative/filmic perspective. However, we live in a material world, so I’d probably have to add having the recording and production budgets to perfectly realise these creative visions!

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Self belief is key, I think. We live in a world where it’s very easy to compare oneself to others and this can be damaging. Everyone is on their own path, if you have the determination to learn your craft to the best of your ability, and practice it as much as possible, then shout that to the rooftops and keep the faith.

How Music Lessons Can Improve Language Skills

Music Lessons

A new study from MIT has found that piano lessons have a very specific effect on kindergartners’ ability to distinguish different pitches, which translates into an improvement in discriminating between spoken words. However, the piano lessons did not appear to confer any benefit for overall cognitive ability, as measured by IQ, attention span, and working memory.

“The children didn’t differ in the more broad cognitive measures, but they did show some improvements in word discrimination, particularly for consonants. The piano group showed the best improvement there,” says Robert Desimone, director of MIT’s McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the senior author of the paper.

“That’s a big thing for kids in learning language: being able to hear the differences between words,” he says. “They really did benefit from that.”

Jodie Foster On Acting

Jodie Foster

Reflecting on her own performance in Hotel Artemis, Foster says, “I’m happy with my performance in the film because I feel like it’s a combination of grounded and emotional, and there’s that kind of Barbara Stanwyck, wisecracky feeling to it as well. That’s really what I was looking for: the opportunity to have more of a transformation, to play a character role but still to inhabit the character with emotion.”

One aspect that drew Foster to the character was the challenge of altering her appearance for the role — though she reveals that made producers question wary of casting someone as famous as her in the first place. She explains, “That’s really the reason I wanted to do the movie, and I had to fight for it. I’ve been looking for a transformation character for five years. I think the producers were a little scared. They were like: ‘Wait a minute. You’re not going to look bad, are you?’ [laughs]It’s like: ‘If you’re not the same Jodie Foster everybody’s used to seeing, then do we want that?’ But it was important. That was the character. She’s a 70-year-old woman who hasn’t left that room for 25 years and lives on tacos and hasn’t had any vitamin D.”

Interview: Adrian Brendle, Pianist

Adrian Brendle

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Speaking purely as a performing musician my definition of success is to convey the ideas of the composer to the audience with my role being the one of an interpreter who takes the liberty to place emphasis on certain aspects of the work. I would say that enabling others to do this equally defines success.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think that patience and persistence are probably very important qualities for young musicians, in combination with a strong belief in what we are doing.
