8 Minutes, A Work Inspired By Solar Science Research

8 Minutes

Alexander Whitley: I am not trying to explain the science in any way, nor am I doing a piece to explain science: there is no way the body can explain complex scientific ideas, but it can represent them in a certain way, which allows people to engage with the ideas behind the theory. What I’ve come to really appreciate is that physics and dance aren’t so different. They are both about studying and understanding movement. It is just that they ask questions in very different scales; solar physics is about understanding movement of atoms and particles and photons, or something of the size of the Sun itself, which is vastly beyond our comprehension. It has been really interesting to learn about the theory, and behaviour of the movement at these different scales and then ask questions of the body in relation to them, and see how much the body is capable of understanding and expressing those ideas, and so they have thrown a lot to me in terms of different ways of thinking about movement, which has been really exciting.

Alexander Whitley Dance Company performs 8 Minutes at Sadler’s Wells on 27 and 28 June 2017. For tickets and further information visit the Sadler’s Wells website.

Solange Turns the Guggenheim Into a Sanctuary for Dance

May 26, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Solange

Like the dress code, her choreography — for herself, two backup vocalists, six musicians and a core group of eight dancers — had an orderliness, anchored by simple geometric formations that echoed Julia Heymans’s set of spherical and rectangular sculptures. Drawing our attention to the height and circularity of the space, a 13-member horn ensemble popped up on two levels of the museum’s spiral ramp, joined later by the dancers and 32 additional performers in a snaking descent toward the rotunda for a voluminous final section.

Quick Tips For Facilitating Flow In The Dance

Focus on the process

The only way to achieve ‘the zone’ that many of us pursue like a holy grail, is to focus on the journey or the moments as they pass.

Enjoy what you’re doing

When we (coaches and athletes) enjoy what we are doing, we are much more likely to be engaged, focused and have a synergy between the mind and body that will allow for efficient physical and psychological performance.

Gauge success by preparation and performance, not the outcome

Measuring success by what is controllable allows a foundation for the two previous tips to manifest.  If the only gauge of success is winning or losing a contest, then we are unlikely to be in a position where we can maintain a present-moment focus, or enjoy what we are doing.
