Val Kilmer on Breaking into Hollywood

June 13, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Val Kilmer

“Work till you cry yourself to sleep every night for months on end. Work so hard you pass out and wake up crying. Become a world class athlete. Read Shakespeare every day to learn about human nature. EVERY DAY. FOR DECADES. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever take a day off. And never complain. It’s the best job on earth and worth it when you break through. They say Dustin Hoffman couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag, and I knew Kevin Spacey since he was like 15 and he was sooooooooooo bad it used to hurt my eyes. But boy did he work hard and deserves all his awards.”

Aleksander Szram

What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far?

Looking back, I can’t really think of anything that could be described as a ‘greatest challenge’, nothing that dramatic. Alternately, I would say that every piece, every concert is a great challenge – the life of a working musician is endless problem-solving, with each solution only leading to new problems/issues to address. In a way, every moment is a great challenge, as you’re always reaching for a perfection that can never be achieved (though at times you can surprise yourself when things seem to come together and become better than you expected they could be). There have been times when I’ve had to do a ludicrous amount of work in a short space of time, but you soon learn not to put yourself through that again (at least, I’m beginning to learn that I shouldn’t put myself through that again). The omnipresent challenge in my career is to stop myself from getting involved in too many projects at the same time! I tend to be very enthusiastic, and it’s a challenge to keep a lid on this at times. This aspect of my personality was a major frustration to all my teachers, without exception.

Do Creative People Really See the World Differently?

Creative Vision

Creativity is associated with ways of seeing, to borrow a phrase from John Berger, but could our actual visual perception affect creative output? That’s what three Australian researchers tried to find out.

The more open you are, the more you see, which is why researchers have long used the following video to highlight the dangers of inattentional blindness—being so focused on one task you engage in a sort of tunnel vision (like stopping your car in the middle of the street to text).

Oscar Isaac on Acting

June 9, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Oscar Isaac

When asked how preparing for this role is different than his other performances, Isaac says, “You allow yourself to let go of the responsibility of having to hit anything. It’s a scary thing to do but you know what? If you’re trying to get a scene right it just might not happen. We might all be up here on a mountain and it won’t be worth filming what comes out. Once you allow that it takes the pressure off and you can be a little more honest in your process. I read a lot about the events portrayed in the film and listened to the stories of survivors who saw grandmothers bayoneted, dead babies left under trees, mass rapes and people being marched out into the desert to their execution. Hearing them describe these horrors first hand was humbling. So, when you’re in that moment in the scene you don’t have to try so hard to imagine what these people suffered. On the day I had to stay easy and loose but also concentrated. It’s a very different experience to shooting X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Why Catchy Songs Get Stuck In Our Brains

June 8, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Earworm

You can read the study yourself here. It begins with a summary of the previous research on “the concepts of musical ‘catchiness’ and song ‘hooks,’” as well as the advice successful musicians often give for writing “hooks” that will stick with listeners for life. It’s not as easy as it looks, though one of the hallmarks of a successful earworm is simplicity. As Joanna Klein writes at the New York Times, Jakubowski and her colleagues “found that earworm songs tended to be fast, with a common, simple melodic structure that generally went up and down and repeated, like ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.’”

Michaela Watkins on her Role in ‘Casual’

Michaela Watkins

“When Casual came about and I auditioned for it, and I found out I got it, I was so thrilled, because it was exactly what I wanted to do next. It was like the exact thing I wanted. I love all the work I do, the opportunities, and those are all wonderful, and I get to do some really fun roles. But that’s it. They’re fun roles that sort of pop in, give some information, and then the story continues, and then they leave. I felt like I really want to chew the meat. I just really want to get to know somebody in a consistent way.”
