Interview: Rowan Hudson, Jazz Pianist

Rowan Hudson

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think probably the best advice I could give is very boring – practice the fundamentals. A lot of people (myself included) neglect simple things like having good time, feeling comfortable in difficult keys (and minor keys), ear training, etc. too early in their development and move on to really complex concepts before the fundamentals are really in place. I definitely made that mistake and I now practice mostly quite basic things along those lines. Also, to me there seems to be a bit too much focus on harmony and not enough focus on phrasing and rhythm in Jazz education, maybe that’s just a personal thing. It’s difficult sometimes early on to see the timeline of your playing. The balance between getting the fundamentals together and also trying to find your own sound can be hard. I think most Jazz players now need to have very solid foundations to built on, maybe that wasn’t the case in the past for people like Ornette Coleman, who made his own rules. But nowadays it seems to be pretty hard to get anywhere without good reading, ability to play in different time signatures, ability to play modal tunes, etc. That’s not necessarily a good thing, but I think it is the way things are now.

Who or what have been the most important influences on your musical life and career?

Definitely my teachers, but also each and every collaboration with an orchestra and a conductor has given me the opportunity to learn something new and develop myself.

What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far?

Learning to say no and finding out my limits.

Workshop for Pianists

DATE:

October 14-15, 2017

PLACE:

University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna – MDW (Austria)

Institut für Konzertfach Klavier – Franz Liszt-Saal

HOSTED BY:

Giuseppe Ravì, Founder and Master Coach of Respiro e Movimento®

WORKSHOP:

Respiro e Movimento® is pleased to announce a Workshop for Pianists at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Pianists will have an opportunity to work with Giuseppe Ravì, Master Coach and expert in restoring the natural balance and harmony in the human body. The main objective of his workshops is for the artist to become aware of unnecessary muscular tensions which prohibit the overall ease required in playing piano.

The result is clear: an overall freedom and strengthening of the essential body movements which enable the artist to physically surpass obstacles which may seem impossible. Pianists will learn how to overcome useless contractions and muscle memory, allowing them to play piano in a more natural, easier and efficient way.

Susan Tomes

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

For me, the most important thing to impart to students is that great music is not ‘entertainment’, nor just a social accomplishment, but a reflection of life. Most of the music I care about is a metaphor for life, of its complexity (and sometimes its simplicity). Great composers have found a way of channelling their thoughts and life experiences into music, in such a way that the rest of us can receive a kind of ‘distilled understanding’ through the music. Once a young musician has grasped this point, working on music becomes much more than a surface task, and they can begin a huge journey of exploration.

How do you work? (as a composer)

I have 2 main composing styles. I sit at the piano and start playing and see where my hands and my emotions at that moment in time lead me. Eventually something starts happening where it feels right and that is often how I find the beginnings of a new piece. From there I’ll refine the idea, and build it up and try variations of it until I settle on “the one”. I also like to listen for music – I often hear music in my mind.. sometimes entire pieces and all the parts and all the instruments. I actually then go and try to play it by ear, from listening to it in my mind.
