PIANIST

Interview: Maria Marchant, Pianist

Maria Marchant

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

I believe the role of a musician is in many ways akin to an interpreter. The piano is a monumental instrument, as Kathryn Stott once mentioned to me, and we are blessed with the ever growing huge canon of repertoire – solo, concerto and chamber. And we have and hopefully will always continue to have an audience! So my job is simply to interpret these genius works of art to convey each composer’s brilliance in a way that feels intrinsic and communicative; to take the audience on an enriching journey which experiences God’s gift of music to composers behind the creative process is success.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Of course we all need endurance and dedication to succeed. But sometimes, success can be measured on a more everyday level – like dealing with a less than perfect piano, or resisting the urge to run away just before the start of the concert!

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

Always remember that you have to communicate the composer’s music to the audience. We have to produce colours so strong and vivid that they can see them, just like a painting.

What are the particular challenges/excitements of working with an orchestra/ensemble?

I think the biggest challenge is to be able to ignite in my players and singers the desire to make the best music they are capable of. The task of the conductor can’t be micromanaging musicians all the time. Of course, there is a bit of that during rehearsal, and it is necessary to have acute ears and be precise. But then on the stage we need to let go. And there is the challenge, to achieve control and freedom at the same time. Needless to say, this is also the most exciting part of the job!

What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far?

Many people still regard classical music as entertainment only. They think classical music is too serious and often puts them to sleep. My mission is not only to entertain but also to contribute positively to the community through music and music education.

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

While the printed score is in two-dimensional black and white, music is a living language. As musicians, we must bring the notes to life and express the music as a colorful, three-dimensional world.

The Role Of Parents In The Upbringing Of Children

Lang Lang

When Chinese pianist Lang Lang was just nine years old, his father gave up his job to take his son from their hometown of Shenyang, to audition for the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

“For three months, I did not have a teacher. So, and I thought my career was over as a pianist, and I should go home,” he told Trailblazers presenter Tania Bryer.

“It was a very difficult time. I mean leaving my mother, coming here, my father quit his job, and we rented the most cheap, the 15 dollar-a-month apartment, and study with a new teacher, with completely different environment. It was very difficult, and I did not really enjoy (it).”

After several months, he got into the Conservatory.

Lang has now sold millions of albums around the world and is an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

Success for me would include: to be able to play the repertoire you love, always have a next project/ concert/ recording to look for, and have a dear audience to share music with.

Interview: Elizabeth Sombart, Pianist

What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?

I think we have to re-think the role of artists in this world. For me, the mission of an artist is to share the wonder of classical music with as many people as possible, and to reach a different public, because this music has a secret capacity to really console people, to give them dignity, and to reveal something inside which is greater than us.
