5 Quick Things To Give Your Music Career a Boost

TIP 1: Branding.

Now is the time to do a sweeping update of your social media accounts and website to make sure they reflect what you want and who you are.

TIP 2: Pitching.

TIP 3: Engagement.

Build relationships online by commenting on others’ posts, asking questions about your followers to learn more about them, sharing others’ content, and replying to anything positive.

TIP 4: Money.

Once you get a clear number of the AVERAGE you spend per month and the average you NEED, you’ll be able to get clear on how much you want to generate. Spoiler alert: it may in fact be lower than you think!

TIP 5: Getting It Done.

Do you have a task on your list that is always getting pushed back? Procrastination is one of the biggest barriers to a musician’s success. The fix? Break your big tasks down into specific micro-tasks.

Why Mozart’s Opera Is More Relevant Today Than Ever Before

James Blachly

James Blachly is Music Director of Geneva Light Opera.

What is true, and what is real? In Mozart’s music, there is always more than meets the eye, and very little that is black and white. Don Giovanni is, in some sense our hero, since it is his story. But he is also the villain; the original title of the opera was “The Scoundrel Punished.” We come to a performance of this opera knowing that he will get his just reward — that he will be dragged to a fiery punishment at the end. Even so, the story is told in such a way that many people find themselves rooting for him until the end, while also cheering when he is dragged to hell.

Every production of Don Giovanni has to decide how much to portray the title character as a lover or a murderer, as a hero or villain. Ultimately, Don Giovanni is a study in contradictions. He is both a nobleman of high station and a callous brute whose servant complains of his sloppiness while he eats; he is seductive and cruel; rash and cunning; foolish, risking all for seemingly meaningless victories, and also ultimately fearless even in the face of death.

We at the Geneva Light Opera have tried in our production of Don Giovanni to reveal all of the above, and more, in this marvelous work. Under the expert stage direction of Phil Lauriat, our internationally renowned cast and orchestra will entice the audience with superb music-making and dramatic insights.

Why Catchy Songs Get Stuck In Our Brains

June 8, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Earworm

You can read the study yourself here. It begins with a summary of the previous research on “the concepts of musical ‘catchiness’ and song ‘hooks,’” as well as the advice successful musicians often give for writing “hooks” that will stick with listeners for life. It’s not as easy as it looks, though one of the hallmarks of a successful earworm is simplicity. As Joanna Klein writes at the New York Times, Jakubowski and her colleagues “found that earworm songs tended to be fast, with a common, simple melodic structure that generally went up and down and repeated, like ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.’”

Why Classical Music Lovers Are Smarter

June 1, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Classical music

There are some unique qualities of classical music which do make it more effective all other things being equal, but that principle can also apply to 15-minute manifestation or some other similar technique.

Classical music is more musically complex compared to rock or pop songs, which means that the stimulant effect is greater as your brain processes these songs. Rather than directly boosting your brain’s power, classical music can create a more soothing environment which is more conducive to thinking.

But do not take this to mean that you should force yourself to listen to classical music if you find it boring and uninteresting. Music, no matter from whom or where it was created, is always enervating and beneficial to your brain. Forcing yourself to listen to uninteresting music will eventually turn yourself off from doing it completely, especially as the benefits and only accumulate over time. If you would rather listen to death metal than Mozart, do not feel ashamed and turn up the volume.
