Is Music Even a Job or Is It Just Something You Do In Your Free Time?
I’ve been hit with “Is music even a job or is it just something you do in your free time?” and “We didn’t even have a music teacher at our school, so there probably won’t be jobs for you when you graduate.” Regardless of the answers I give, there always seem to be more questions. It’s hard enough working toward my major academically, but no one prepared me for the amount of work it takes to defend my major’s importance.
Music education differs from studying performance in that, while we are required to take many of the same classes — such as music theory and history, musical skills, and the fundamentals of piano — we also learn how to play every instrument offered in schools’ music programs, including string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. If you think that’s a walk in the park, we have ensemble rehearsal for two hours a day at least three days a week, individual lessons on our primary instrument, and field observations of music education in local schools. Add on a casual 20-credit-hour course load — as opposed to virtually everyone else at IU with an average of 15 credits per semester — and you’ve got a concoction for one of the most stressful majors on IU’s campus.

The 3 Stages Of A Successful Music Launch
Music Launch Phase #1: Intrigue
The Intrigue phase is the longest phase of the launch and it begins before your fanbase even know about your new project.
Its goal is to take back the curtain and give your community a sneak peek at what you’re working on.
You could do this by using video on Facebook Live and Periscope or even by sharing images and visual stories on Snapchat and Instagram.
Music Launch Phase #2: Launch
During our interview, Steve made a very interesting point: “Even though this is where many indie artists spend a lot of time on, Launch is actually a relatively short phase.”
Up until now, you may have thought that you’d need to spend months and months in the Launch phase…
Have you ever heard of the “blitz marketing campaign” concept?
It’s a strategy where you focus on pre–arranging press coverage, digital marketing campaigns, etc. and launch everything over a short period of time.
Music Launch Phase #3: Support
Think about it: your community knows what you’ve been working on, they’ve given you feedback, and they feel like they’ve been active participants in the music creation process.
What do you think will happen when your EP is finally ready to be launched and you’re looking for support?
Your community – which has been EMOTIONALLY involved in the whole process – will help you out.

What It’s Like To Win An Emmy
You’re in the audience suffering through the show. Finally it’s your category. You wake up. The envelope is ripped open, your name is read, you can’t believe it, and you race up to the stage. You stand at the podium.
What’s going through your mind at a monumental moment like this? For me, honestly, I thought of all the assholes I went through basic training with in the army who thought I was such a fuck up. I was hoping they were watching and having heart attacks from shock. I was also aware that everyone in the audience was glaring at me. I saw the red light of the camera, knew that yes, this was my one big moment on national television. But I also knew that if I didn’t get the hell off quick – I mean REAL quick — millions of people I didn’t know were going to hate my guts.
So I rushed through my prepared speech, thanked my wife, son, and I think Drill Sgt. Miller then was led off. Backstage, you take photos with your presenters.
