Tracy Letts on Turning Down Acting Work

June 1, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Tracy Letts

Letts explains that turning down roles doesn’t reflect his financial situation — it has more to do with his desire to do the work. He explains, “It pre-supposes a certain financial comfort, which I haven’t always enjoyed. I didn’t make any real money until I was in my forties, when August: Osage County hit, so there’s always been economic considerations to work prior to that. But I think some of it is just a mindset, too, where you sit there and you say, ‘It’s not worth it. It’s not worth the agonizing, it’s not worth sleepless nights, it’s not worth doing work that I’m not proud of.’ Ultimately, economic considerations be damned if it’s really not worth it.”

Jon Favreau: “Acting is the closest thing you’ll get to an apprenticeship for directing”

Jon Favreau

Through acting Favreau learned how to become a director, and he suggests that aspiring directors become actors first. He points out, “Acting is the closest thing you’ll get to an apprenticeship for directing because you’re actually on set watching the director do what they do. When you go to school for directing, you rarely have the luxury of actually shadowing and watching someone else who’s doing it well. But because I was on so many sets, I got to learn whose style I liked.”

Goldie Hawn: “I believe you have to start with a craft; you don’t just start with a dream”

Goldie Hawn

Hawn explains, “I believe you have to start with a craft; you don’t just start with a dream. You’ve got to put a lot of work in. If you want to pursue acting, then you go to acting class. If you want to be a dancer, then you learn to dance, which is what I did. If you want to be a ventriloquist or join the circus … When you’re young, you start looking at what you want to do—not just who you want to be, but what you want to do. And I think the tenacity to say, ‘I’m going to perfect that,’ is the beginning of a work ethic. It’s the beginning of a talent. I would say, ‘Perfect what you do well. Branch out and learn how to do other things. Dreams sometimes don’t work out. But what will carry you through your life is the authenticity of who you are. Start with learning how to hammer a nail into a piece of wood. And be really good at it. Learn what it is to sweat. Learn what it is to fail. Learn how to take rejection. Don’t personalize it.’ I always believed that I could become a dance teacher. I had a realistic dream.”

Chris Pratt on His Failed ‘Superman Returns’ Audition

May 9, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Chris Pratt

Pratt didn’t get the role — Brandon Routh did — and the 2006 Superman film was made with a lukewarm response from critics and fans and Routh never made another Superman movie. Pratt later became Marvel’s Star-Lord to much greater box office success. Pratt then added, “It just goes to show that it’s all divinely planned. If it’s not working out in the moment, then have faith that it might work out in the future. The no’s that you get today might mean an even more powerful yes in the future. You know what I mean?”

Pratt concluded by joking, “I’m glad I wasn’t Superman!”

What Are the Two Things That Emma Watson Looks For When Choosing a Role?

May 8, 2017 By Respiro E Movimento · Follow us: Facebook · Twitter · Instagram · YouTube

Emma Watson

People sometimes talk about me as being a brand, having a strategy and whatever else. I wish. Seriously. I wish I had it together enough to have a strategy. But it’s so instinctual. It usually comes down to two things: the person I’m working with—the director is really important to me—and a line in a script.
